Description

Aaval (scientific name: Holoptelea integrifolia) is a wild tree found in the deciduous and semi-evergreen forests of the Western Ghats in Kerala. Belonging to the Almaceae plant family, this tree is found in most states of India. A decoction of its leaves is used in Ayurveda to treat hair fall.

Aval grows up to 18 meters tall. They grow well in well-drained soil. The tree cannot withstand extreme cold. Their rough skin peels off in pieces. The leaves have a foul odor when crushed. The leaves are pinnately arranged in parallel. The leaves are oblong in shape, 10 cm long and 4 cm wide. The tree blooms during January-February. The ovary is solitary. Fruits ripen in summer. Seed distribution is done by wind. Natural regeneration is well underway. The seeds germinate during the rainy season. Dry fruits are good to eat. Although the wood is heavy and strong, it is not durable enough to make furniture. The wood is white and hearty. Used for making agricultural implements and making matches.

Aval leaves and bark are used medicinally. Soothes phlegm. Used for skin diseases, leprosy, arses, blood purification and diabetes. The bark of the tree contains freidilin, lignin, and pentosan, the seed contains yellow oil and glutamic acid, and the leaves contain protein, carbohydrates, and phosphorus.
